SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates) recently auctioned off a collection of quilts left to the organization by a member who had passed away. I bid on and won a quilt by Therese May, whose work I have long admired. It is completely unlike anything I do, which is part of the reason I enjoy her work and am happy to own a piece. When I received the quilt I found it even more interesting “in person.” May used a combination of paints, beads, yo-yos, and glass embellishments, creating a highly textural piece of art. Notice the bumpy outer border.

“Love is the Answer” by Therese May
When I looked at May’s website, I noticed that my quilt “Love is the Answer” is similar in style to a sample for a workshop she offers called Abundance Quilts.

I have purchased other quilts at silent auctions at quilt shows, also looking for styles and techniques different than my own. When I present my Two-Day Quilt Judging Seminar I bring these quilts for practice judging by the participants so they have the opportunity to evaluate a wide variety of quilts. “Love is the Answer” is going to be a great addition both an as art quilt and a mixed media piece.
