Quilt Judging–Umpqua Valley Quilters

I spent Thursday, April 9th, judging for the Umpqua Valley Quilters Guild in Roseburg, Oregon. Shows often have special exhibits. Among them, I found one called Strands of Jewels fresh and unique, having never seen one like it before. Sixty members created pieces 6″ wide of similar lengths in any style they wished. The “strands” were hung with sides touching, creating a colorful presentation when viewed as a whole. It was then fascinating to study the strands up close to see what each maker had chosen to do.

Quilt shows, both large and small, may also have featured artists. At Umpqua Valley’s show, “Earth, Wind, and Flowers,” the honored quilter was Carolyn Devasier. Many of her quilts were hand-quilted. Her Delectable Mountains, fittingly given the place of honor in her display, was my favorite. Although I’m not a traditional quilter myself, I always say if someone gave me a traditional quilt, such as this, I would be delighted.

Strands of jewels — so colorful and brilliant. The careful grouping of the designs made a spectacular display. Very pleasing to the eye.

Delectable Mountains reflected a southwestern flavor so deserving of its place of honor.

    Great selections.

Thanks very much Pat. Great observations. Maybe you should be a quilter!
