Our next tale is known as La Belle et le BĂȘte in French. Surely, most of us know the story, because if you haven’t read it, you’ve either seen the musical or the Disney movie version. Jo Baner, another one of my colleagues in Hollis Chatelain’s ten-year Master Art Series, is the creator of this piece. She loves to draw and is always enthusiastic when Hollis asks us to draw in class–unlike some of us who struggle with this aspect of the design process.
We had the option to request a particular tale, or participants could let Sue, the coordinator, pick one for us. Jo explains, “I requested “Beauty and the Beast” because I’ve been wanting to paint some faces on a quilt. This quilt was free-hand drawn and painted with Shiva Paintstiks. The background, hair, and clothes were quilted on my longarm. The faces were done on my Bernina.”
Jo included close-ups of each face.
