I had the pleasure of presenting a special award called the Award of Merit to Gerrie Thompson for her quilt “Improv 3” at the Clark County Quilters’ Show called “A Walk on the Wild Side”. This award is offered through the National Association of Certified Quilt Judges to a quilt demonstrating excellence in design or workmanship. While I always try to give this award, I don’t always do so, as I want the award to be significant in maintaining a standard. In the case of this quilt, the design draws me in. While it is symmetrical, it is far from boring. The color and value placement keep my eye moving from one area to another. The quilt contains excellent variety in scale and repetition, with the quilting complementing the overall design through line repetition.
